Starting addiction treatment should not feel like a paperwork maze. For many people in Troy and Rensselaer County, not knowing what to bring or what to expect can make the first step feel harder than it needs to be. At a recommended outpatient rehab, the intake process should be clear, practical, and focused on getting you connected to care as quickly as possible.
At our Troy Outpatient Clinic, we keep the process straightforward. Here is what to expect before your first appointment.
The first step is a clinical assessment. This is a conversation with a licensed clinician, usually lasting about 45 to 90 minutes.
During the assessment, we talk through your substance use history, physical health, mental health, living situation, and any past treatment experiences. The goal is not to judge you. The goal is to understand what kind of support you need and what level of care makes the most sense.
At our Troy clinic, assessments can typically be scheduled within 24 hours of your first call. Walk-ins are also welcome during clinic hours.
You do not need to have everything perfectly organized before reaching out. Still, bringing a few items can help the intake process move faster.
Bring a government-issued photo ID if you have one, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. If you do not have one available, let our intake team know when you call. It should not stop you from being assessed.
Bring your insurance card or insurance information. This includes Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance details.
It also helps to bring a list of current medications, including the dosage and prescribing provider, if you know it. This is especially important if medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, may be part of your care.
Our intake team handles insurance verification as part of the enrollment process.
We accept Healthfirst, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Fidelis Care, MetroPlus Health, MVP Healthcare, Medicaid, Medicare, state-financed insurance, most private plans, and self-pay.
If you are not sure whether your insurance is accepted, call our intake line. Our staff can tell you what information is needed and help you understand what coverage may apply.
If you are starting treatment because of a DWI charge, court referral, or legal requirement in Troy or Rensselaer County, bring any paperwork you received from the court, DMV, attorney, probation officer, or referral source.
Our Troy clinic provides DWI evaluations and documentation that meets New York State court and DMV requirements.
Bringing legal paperwork to your first appointment helps the clinical team understand what is required and make sure the correct documentation is included in your treatment plan from the beginning.
Some clients begin treatment because of a professional licensing concern. This may apply to nurses, lawyers, teachers, therapists, executives, or other credentialed professionals.
Our Professionals’ Group is designed for people in this situation. It provides structured treatment in a peer-matched setting and can support documentation needs for licensing boards or oversight programs.
If you have letters, emails, or written requirements from a licensing board, bring them to your first appointment. That helps us understand what needs to be documented from the start.
After the assessment, our clinical team will recommend the appropriate level of care. This may include regular outpatient treatment, Intensive Outpatient Program services, individual counseling, group therapy, medication-assisted treatment, or a combination of services.
For many clients, the first group or individual session can be scheduled shortly after the assessment, often within a day or two.
For clients who qualify for medication-assisted treatment, the process can begin as soon as clinically appropriate. Same-day MAT may be available for clients who need immediate medication support.
Your treatment records are private. Records at our Troy clinic are protected under HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, which provides additional federal privacy protections for substance use disorder treatment.
That means information about your care cannot be shared without your written consent, except in very limited situations required by law.
This applies to employers, family members, courts, licensing boards, and other outside parties.
You do not need to have every document in hand before asking for help. If you have your ID, insurance information, medication list, and any legal or licensing paperwork, bring them. If you are missing something, our intake team can help you figure out what is needed.
The most important step is starting the assessment.
At our Troy Outpatient Clinic, the process is designed to get you connected to care quickly, clearly, and with as few barriers as possible.
