The Role of Therapeutic Recreation in Treatment for Substance Use Disorder

February is National Recreation Therapy Month!

“Recreational therapy, also known as Therapeutic Recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.” Source: NCTRC

Therapeutic Recreation takes a holistic approach with interventions that affect five domains of the human condition – physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.

Our Activities Department staff Abby (CTRS) and Tracy, utilize a variety of activities and interventions as a part of this approach.  Our facilities include a swimming pool, hot tub, table games/craft area, exercise room, and gym that allow our folks to engage in a wide variety of recreational activities.  Each unit also receives a Therapeutic Recreation group to provide education about sober leisure, stress management, wellness in recovery, and other related topics.  In addition to these programs, Abby and Tracy also plan special events – especially during September (National Recovery Month) and for holidays.

During RT Month, we celebrate Abby and Tracy for all they do!
